RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
