Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates the manager's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
